TIMES HONGKONG, JAKARTA – Taekwondo, a Korean martial art that is becoming increasingly popular in Indonesia, is not only a physical but also a mental exercise. For beginners who are interested in this sport, it is important to know some basic tips that can help improve their skills and develop their potential on the field.
International Taekwondo Champion Athlete Nayunda Bella shared some tips for this. From basic techniques to how to maintain discipline, here are some tips for practicing taekwondo that beginners can follow.
1. Master Basic Techniques Well
One of the keys to success in taekwondo is mastering the basic techniques. In the early stages, focus on basic moves such as Kyorugi (fighting)
Poomsae (moves) as well as various types of kicks and punches that characterize taekwondo. According to International Taekwondo Champion Athlete Nayunda Bella, mastering basic techniques is a foundation that must be strengthened early on.
"Many beginners are too quick to want to learn advanced techniques, even though a strong foundation of basic movements will be very helpful at a later stage," Bella explained.
"Keep practicing basic kicks and punches because from there you will develop better control, balance, and strength."
2. Focus on Balance and Coordination
In taekwondo, balance is very important, especially when performing high kicks or consecutive attacks. Balance training can be done with simple movements such as standing on one foot or using tools such as a balance ball.
Coordination between hands, eyes, and feet also needs to be honed to make attacks more precise.
"To maintain balance, I always recommend practicing one movement over and over again until it is perfect. It is important not to rush, because balance affects the power of the attack," Bella says.
3. Maintain Physical Condition and Flexibility
Taekwondo demands excellent physical condition and good flexibility. Doing regular physical exercises such as jogging, skipping, or push-ups will be very helpful in improving endurance and muscle strength.
In addition, regular stretching will help improve flexibility, which is essential in performing high kicks.
"I always remind students not to skip warming up and stretching before training. This not only prevents injury, but also helps the muscles become more flexible," Bella adds.
4. Train Discipline and Consistency Mentality
Besides technique and physical strength, taekwondo also teaches important values such as discipline, focus, and consistency. Regular and consistent practice will help achieve better results.
The mentality of discipline taught in taekwondo applies not only in the arena, but also in everyday life.
"A true taekwondoin must have a strong mentality. Sometimes laziness can arise, especially when the body is tired. However, that's where the challenge lies-training yourself to remain consistent and not give up easily," he said.
5. Train with a Sparring Partner
Sparring or fighting with a partner is very important in improving fighting skills in taekwondo. By practicing sparring, a taekwondoin can understand how to deal with opponents, set strategies, and train agility in responding to attacks.
However, it is important to remember that sparring should be done safely, using the right protective gear, and under the supervision of a coach.
"Practicing with a sparring partner will make you more prepared for the real match. It is a very useful simulation to know your own weaknesses and strengths," he says.
6. Still Enjoy the Process
Taekwondo is a sport that takes time and patience to master. Don't be too hasty in setting high targets, enjoy every training process, be it success or failure. Every practice is an opportunity to get better.
As Siti said, "Taekwondo is not just about winning medals, but also about enjoying the learning process and understanding yourself."
By following the tips above, beginners can improve their skills in taekwondo while developing a strong and positive mentality. Most importantly, stay disciplined, practice consistently, and always try to give your best in every training session. (*)
