TIMES HONGKONG, JAKARTA – East Java boasts an astonishing natural wealth, including a series of beautiful mountains scattered across the province. These mountains not only offer breathtaking views but also become a favorite destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. For Devana Nur, a student at UIN Malang who is actively involved in mountain climbing, the mountains of East Java are a hidden paradise that every nature lover should explore.

Perfect Places to Go Hiking

1. Mount Bromo: An Iconic Beauty in East Java

Mount Bromo may be one of the most famous mountains in East Java, but its beauty never fails to captivate visitors. "Bromo is the icon of East Java. Not only because of its active crater but also due to its vast sea of sand and stunning sunrise views," said Devana Nur. He added that for beginner hikers, Bromo can be an ideal place to start their hiking adventure.

Although the terrain is not too challenging, Mount Bromo offers an unforgettable experience. From the top of Penanjakan, visitors can enjoy the panoramic sunrise with the backdrop of Mount Semeru, the highest mountain in Java. The vast sea of sand also provides a unique sensation, making it feel like you're on another planet.

2. Mount Semeru: The Highest Challenge in Java

For hikers seeking a greater challenge, Mount Semeru is the perfect choice. "Semeru is the highest mountain on Java Island, and climbing it is not easy. It requires strong physical stamina and mental toughness," Devana explained. He mentioned that the journey to the Mahameru peak requires thorough preparation, especially due to the unpredictable weather and the steep terrain.

However, all the effort will be worth it once hikers reach the summit. "The view from Mahameru’s peak is breathtaking. You can see the mountainous landscape and clouds beneath your feet. It’s a spiritual experience for many hikers," Devana explained. He also reminded hikers to be cautious and follow strict safety rules when climbing Mahameru.

3. Mount Arjuno-Welirang: Natural Beauty and History

Not far from Malang, there are Mount Arjuno and Mount Welirang, two twin mountains that are often a hiking destination. According to Devana, climbing Mount Arjuno-Welirang not only offers natural beauty but also presents a rich historical story. "Along the Arjuno hiking trail, there are many historical sites like temples from ancient kingdoms. This adds more meaning to the hike," he said.

Mount Arjuno is known for its wide savannah at the summit, while Mount Welirang is famous for its sulfur mining activities. Hikers often encounter traditional miners carrying sulfur down from the mountain.

4. Mount Ijen: The World-Famous Blue Flame

Besides Semeru and Bromo, Mount Ijen in Banyuwangi is also a favorite destination, especially because of the rare 'blue fire' phenomenon, which can only be found in a few places in the world. "The blue flame in Ijen is one of the mountain’s main attractions. Many tourists, both local and international, come just to witness this phenomenon," said Devana.

In addition to the blue flame, Mount Ijen is also famous for its large sulfur crater. The hike to Ijen's crater is relatively easy, making it suitable for hikers of all levels. However, Devana warned hikers to be cautious of the sulfur fumes, which can be dangerous if inhaled in large amounts.

Important Preparations Before Hiking

Devana Nur also shared some important tips for hikers who wish to explore the mountains of East Java. "The most important thing is to prepare physically and mentally. Climbing mountains, especially high ones like Semeru, requires good stamina. Additionally, prepare equipment like warm jackets, lightweight food, and navigation tools," he advised.

He also reminded hikers to always maintain cleanliness and environmental sustainability. "Bring your trash back down and don’t damage the plants or animals around. As hikers, we have a responsibility to preserve nature," Devana stressed.

The Best Time to Hike Mountains in East Java

According to Devana, the best time to hike the mountains of East Java is during the dry season, from April to September. "During the dry season, the weather tends to be more stable, and the hiking trails are safer. In the rainy season, the trails can become very slippery and dangerous," he explained.

He also advised hikers to always monitor weather conditions before climbing and follow guidelines from national park officials or mountain managers. "Safety should always be the priority," he ended.

The mountains in East Java, such as Bromo, Semeru, and Ijen, offer extraordinary natural beauty. Check out tips from Devana Nur, a UIN Malang student, on exploring this hidden paradise.
